MetaBlox Installs Web3 WiFi Miner in Vancouver Food Court

A MetaBlox miner was recently installed for a business in a busy on-campus food court at the University of British Columbia

The MetaBlox team has installed its first Vancouver-area MetaBlox miner at FoodiePower, a small, family-run business at a food court in UBC. The storefront offers a range of Chinese cuisine to guests of the busy dining space. These miners are special routers that establish WiFi connections decentrally by functioning as blockchain nodes that work together to verify on-chain web credentials known as DIDs (or Decentralized Identities).

You can access MetaBlox’s global decentralized WiFi network by creating a DID for your device on the free MetaBlox app, available for Android and iOS.

FoodiePower’s owners wanted to offer better WiFi access to the students who visit their store, as many complained that the existing on campus internet was weak and did not offer automatic reconnections.

OpenRoaming Integration

Thanks to MetaBlox’s miner, FoodiePower’s WiFi network is now a part of MetaBlox and the WBA’s global OpenRoaming WiFi network. That means anyone who connects to FoodiePower’s WiFi using the MetaBlox app will subsequently get automatic connections at over 2 million other WiFi locations, including FoodiePower, eliminating manual logins and passpoint screens.

To connect at any OpenRoaming location, including FoodiePower, visitors simply download the MetaBlox app, create an OpenRoaming profile, and follow some simple prompts during initial access. After that, connections to all 2 million WiFi locations will be automatic. Users will be able to view all these WiFi nodes on the MetaBlox app’s explorer map.

Moreover, connection security at all OpenRoaming locations is enterprise-level.

Decentralized Deployment

MetaBlox miners, including the one in FoodiePower, issue mPoints as they establish WiFi connections. These mining rewards will become convertible to ROAM tokens after the project’s coin listing in 2024. Token-incentivization thus enables decentral deployment of the OpenRoaming network by the Web3 community.

MetaBlox Business Solutions

Besides WiFi OpenRoaming integration, FoodiePower was happy to receive an Airswift crypto payment gateway as part of MetaBlox’s business package. The gateway lets merchants accept a range of tokens as payment, and convert them to stablecoin or fiat daily.

In addition, businesses hosting MetaBlox miners will soon be able to attract more customers using in-store mining opportunities. This means visitors will be able to earn points and tokens for validating the WiFi network from the MetaBlox app. Just as MetaBlox routers issue tokens as they verify DID credentials, MetaBlox WiFi users can earn tokens by verifying MetaBlox routers themselves, which helps maintain the network by checking WiFi connection quality.
